The Purex Challenge

Purex Challenge

I love Purex laundry detergent. In fact that is the only laundry detergent I use for my whole family’s laundry! I love it because Purex is super affordable and holds up just as well as the more expensive brands. So I just signed up with Purex Social Insiders and got my first campaign to try a free bottle of Purex plus Clorox 2 to test and review and decided to do a little Purex Challenge!

Purex plus Clorox 2 is a brand new product that just became available in March 2016.  It claims that Purex plus Clorox 2 detergent contains 3 stain-fighting enzymes to remove 100 stains. Some of these stains include starchy stains like chocolate and tomato sauce, protein-based stains like grass and blood, and stains that use guar gum like ice cream and BBQ sauce.  It brightens whites and it’s safe for colors. It also comes in two fragrances: Original Fresh and Sunny Linen. Nice!

But how well does it work? I decided to test out a few things from my own kitchen for this Purex challenge and filmed a little video to show you what I used and the results of the Purex challenge.

What I used for the Purex challenge…

I used an old but clean white towel as the base for the Purex challenge. And here are the products I poured onto the towel:

  1. Ketchup
  2. Mustard
  3. Italian Dressing (contains vinegar and oil – should be challenging)
  4. BBQ sauce
  5. Grape Juice
  6. Coffee (but not without a small sip first, because coffee! ♥)

    Purex Challenge Before
Purex Challenge Before – isn’t it pretty?

And as you can see, it created quite a beautiful mess on the towel.

Then I put it to the test!

*Tip – When I do laundry, I like to pour the detergent into the machine first before adding clothes. I turn the water on and let it mix with the detergent for a bit so that the detergent is dispersed evenly in the water before adding my clothes while it is filling up.

Now for the Purex challenge, I did not have a full load of laundry. I just had 2 small kitchen towels and a few pairs of my husbands underwear. I thought this would be a good way to test out the product so if it doesn’t work, I can’t blame it on the fact that there were too many clothes in the laundry.  Although I’m going to admit, I died a little inside doing such a small load of laundry. Because I am cheap and always want to save money, I typically do my laundry just once a week when I have lots of things to wash. But this is for science! Ok, not really.

So I set my washer for a small load with warm water and let it do its thing.

The results of the Purex challenge…

The Purex plus Clorox 2 got out most of the stains – even the ones I thought would be more of a challenge including the BBQ sauce and the Italian dressing. But the ones it didn’t get out were the mustard and the grape juice. Needless to say I was a little disappointed (and just a tad embarrassed). Here is a photo of the towel after it was washed in Purex with Clorox 2.

Purex challenge after
Purex Challenge After – As soon as I put the towel down, my dog just had to lay on it.

Now, I personally hate mustard and I never eat it. Thus, I’m not really familiar with the nuances of mustard and was surprised that it left such a distinct stain. I did a little research about it and discovered that it contains Turmeric. Tumeric is a yellow DYE that’s found both in mustard seeds and in actual mustard as an additive to enhance the yellow color. Awesome. And when I performed the Purex challenge, I did exactly what you are NOT supposed to do when you get mustard on your clothes (e.g. rub it into the fabric, where it sets into the fibers).

So if you do end up with mustard or other tough stains on your clothes you should blot it first and pretreat it by rubbing some Purex plus Clorox 2 detergent with stain fighters into the fabric and let it sit for 5 mins before washing. Duly noted!

My thoughts on the Purex challenge

So the bottom line is Purex with Clorox 2 passed the challenge for the most part. You can see how well it got out the rest of the stains and got the towel nice and bright. There are just a few that tended to be a bit more difficult and stronger measures are needed. This would probably be the case with ANY laundry detergent you use. But if you are on a strict budget, Purex is one of the most affordable, quality laundry detergents you can buy. It’s such a smart value! I am still a huge fan and I am not planning on switching anytime soon.

  1. You did a great job with this review. I love how you showed various stains and the level of how Purex removed them.

  2. What I loved about the review was even though you didn’t get the mustard stain out,you showed us the true results and explained what went wrong.Plus you also gave a very useful tip for getting mustard stain outThanks .

    • Thank you. Yeah I messed up with the mustard. But now hopefully the same thing won’t happen to anyone else 🙂

  3. I love the post but what I love most is that you assumed the persona of that woman. Who was she again, with the res head scarf and the muscles! I LOVE it! Well done and very creative!

    • Haha! I actually wear my hair like this on several occasions. I call it my “Friday hair” for when I go for a few days without washing. But I thought it was kind of appropriate for this post. Glad you liked the review 🙂

  4. Loved this review! Currently I’ve been using Gain and Tide, and that’s only because Costco doesn’t sell that many brands. However, I have used Purex in the past and liked it. #ProductReviewParty

    • Thank you. Tide is just so expensive and when I have tried it in the past, I don’t think it performs any better than Purex. But I do like how many new products Tide has come up with. They are very innovative.

  5. Great review! I don’t personally use Purex but it was interesting to read.

  6. I think it worked great. I have three boys and I’m the worst at getting stains out!! I need to try this detergent.

  7. Mustard stains are really hard to get out! This is such a great review. I love how you compared different stains.

  8. Wow it cleaned up the stains very well. I love using Purex too because it works so well and the price is amazing!

  11. Wow, this looks super effective! Good job trying it out so I can see how well it works. I might buy it next time now.

  12. I mostly use Tide but after reading your review, I am definitely going to check out Purex.

  13. Looks like a good, solid detergent. I actually make my own, but it’s always great to see the new improvements. Never know when they might give me an idea of how to improve my own.

  14. Nice reviews. I’m using tide for the past 1 year. Have to try this new one once, shall we use this detergent in warm water?

  15. Great post, I watch tons of commercials advertise getting out stains, it’s nice to see a REAL demo of a great product. Thanks for sharing your challenge!

  16. I definitely trust seeing a real person use a detergent over the ads on tv. Bummer about the grape juice.

    • Haha yeah. Lesson learned! Thanks for the comment 🙂

I love hearing from you...
